I use a pen name. And when submitting I use my real name, and just put my website address at the bottom of the letters. Most editors figure it out. As for RWA, I'm not help there. I've only enetered two RWA contests and I used my real name.

I also some contests on the entry forms ask if you use a pen name don't they? I've been thinking about pen names a lot lately and will most likely be switching over so I'm very interested in these comments.

The issue last summer with the RWA GH was the author that was being stalked and didn't want her real name (which was the one the stalker knew) on the RWA website. RWA posted her real name, but the stalker (who is from Houston) did not make an appearance at the conference in Dallas.

I never understood why RWA made such a big stink about wanting the author's real name listed, Margee. For some reason, that solidified in my mind that RWA wants authors to use their real name for RWA membership/contest purposes. I can totally understand not wanting your real name anywhere on the internet...

Well, I'm not sure how much help I can be. In a way, Sylvia Day is a pen name because it is my maiden name and not my married name (which is my legal name). RWA has me on the roster with my married name, but I use my maiden name for everything writing related, contests and otherwise.

On my Kensington contract it has my full name with my maiden name as a middle name (same thing for my GH entries, whose e-mail confirmations came to me under Sylvia Day). I enter all RWA contests under Sylvia Day. I send all agent/publisher correspondence and queries under Sylvia Day. The only time they need to know my real name is if we're signing something legal.

I don't see how contest wins can help you if they're not associated with the name you intend to use in publication, but that's just me.

Cece - I thought so too...but I'm with Sylvia in that I don't see how contests wins under your real name help...

Sylvia - under the members page - are you listed as pen or married name then?

I need to get this under control - way too confusing. Although when I emailed GE coordinator she said no problem with me using my pen-name. Now I've just got to get the RWA # to match it/coordinate with it.

Steph,
On my actual member page that you need my passward to enter, it says Welcome Sylvia Day!, because under profile it asks for "nickname" and that's where I put my pen name. But the information below that shows my married name. Does that make sense?

That makes total sense (that's your personal page, right?)- but I'm thinking about the page that you can request your name to be added as an unpubbed member - more of a listing of all the unpubbed members in alpha. order...but maybe listing my pen-name as a nickname will take care of that...

maybe drinking now will help some too :)

have just answered my own question - Sylvia is listed under member links with pen-name, and so is Emma...

So now it's about reconciling the member # with the pen-name. I think. Again I ask why RWA had an issue with authors using their 'real' names for the GH? Sheesh.

Def. drinking now.
